What is Compounding
Compounding is the science of preparing customized medications for patients. It involves the combining of the exact dose of individual ingredients designed to meet a patient’s specific requirements. Compounding is performed according to the exact specifications of a physician, veterinarian, or another healthcare provider.
Why is Compounding needed?
There are many situations in which a compounded medication is needed. For example:
A medication that has been discontinued or simply not manufactured by a pharmaceutical company may need to be compounded.
A patient may need a customized dose that is not available in commercially manufactured medication.
A patient may be allergic to one or more non-essential ingredients in a commercially available medication.
